Autobiographical

Craig Millar is an identity. Sharp witted dangerously driven and willing to take those around him on an adventure, whether on stage or in life. Unique in my outlook, I am driven to create a vehicle to advance and drive the creativity and culture special to Australia .

I am proud of the fact that I was not born in this country, but believe that not only am I an Australian but in the fact that Australia is the last free country and from where I stand, sit, talk, walk, act, think, write, create, study, research, hypothesize and strategize and philosophize, Australia can showcase herself to the world with the best Writers, Directors, Producers, Actors, Comedians, Artists and Photographers.

I thrive on my personal energy, and firmly believe that Knowledge Is Power, and that you should chase your dream so as not to live in a nightmare of regret. I am a disciple of Wing Chun, an avid believer in no religion and I look towards the future of humanity with hope and positive thought, as the world needs free thought, and creative outlets for all. I reward anyone who offers me an opportunity or assistance, and I move aside anything that stands in my way. This is nothing but positive for I have no time for anyone who doubts me or wishes to cast dispersions about my ability, as negative people never succeed.

Purpose

To make people enjoy life. I would like my legacy to be a way for others to express themselves. I firmly believe that you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to, which is not told to enough people today. The world will never be a perfect place for we not advanced enough to see the pain and suffering we cause each other, but by creating a way for people to enjoy the thoughts and feeling that they have and to find an outlet for that would make me feel complete.

I work towards success with the view that financial gain equals freedom of expression. I have left my full time job to pursue my creative urge and to feed the fire that burns inside that compels me to chase my dream. Comedy as an art form is a long and exiting journey and one, which is not easily done, nor should it be.

Comedy Identity

Something that I will no doubt change and evolve at every major point in my life, as it began with so much frustration and angst and is developing into social and political viewpoint, with cultural incongruity and a forked tongue for those who are fitting to a serve of public comment. I am energetic, physical and likeable, but most of all upfront and truthful in the perspective that I put forward.

Comedy is the last vehicle for truth and free speech, it encapsulates all the images and stories that we live and learn every day and put them across in one movement with no second take, you write, direct and perform in a place all to yourself with your heart pinned to your sleeve and when the energy of reaching an audience comes back to you in a wave of laughter, it is the most rewarding experience you can give to anyone.

Salesman by day, comedian by night. Craig Millar rehearses in a room with walls plastered with motivations, gags, as he hatches plans for a conquering career in comedy.

Aspiring stand-up and Comedy Festival performer Craig Millar takes a business-like approach to his performance, writes Larissa Dubecki.

Look out, Rove. Step aside, Dave Hughes. Meet Craig Millar, salesman by day and aspiring stand-up comedian by night. After performing his first gig only 18 months ago, he is taking his show The Colour of Comedy to the world in this year's Melbourne International Comedy Festival. And he is certain it is just the start of a very lucrative future. As Millar likes to say, "Funny is money."

The 26-year-old talks comedy with a salesman's earnest patter. He has a separate "comedy" mobile phone, and at home the walls of one room are covered in butcher's paper outlining his plan of attack - first, Melbourne , then the world.

He is undeterred by the fact that for every superstar comedian on a six-figure salary there are hundreds of others struggling to break even. Instead, he is confident that a gig on television or breakfast radio - with big bucks and instant recognition - is within reach, give or take a few years' hard work. As festival director for the past seven years, Susan Provan has seen it all before. She estimates that of the hundreds of performers involved each year, about half are new to live comedy.

"A lot of comedians start out bright-eyed and bushytailed and get steadily less bright and bushy as the festival goes on," she says. "There's extraordinary optimism. But they've got to have the optimism that they'll be the hit of the festival or they would never get on stage."

Ms Provan speaks glowingly of Comedy Festival alumni such as Dave Hughes, who went from playing the smallest Town Hall room to the biggest.

"People think it looks easy that comedians like Hughes are making good money, but they forget that he spent many years working hard and making nothing," she says.

Comedy trio Tripod have the kind of resume aspiring comedians would kill for, including a spot on ABC youth radio Triple J and national television exposure on Channel Ten's SkitHOUSE.

They went professional about five years ago by accident. "I didn't so much think I was a professional comedian as quit my job and realise I didn't have to get another one," says Tripod member Scod. This year they'll perform in the Town Hall's 1500-seat main room. Not too long ago though they pooled money for petrol and came up with a measly $5. "We worked for food at a Swiss restaurant for a while. But you can't think about the money, you do it for love," says Tripod's Yon.

Kevin Whyte, manager of Tripod and notables including Rove McManus, Dave Hughes and Wil Anderson, estimates the number of Australians making a living from live comedy is in the "very low hundreds". "Entertainment really is an industry of extremes," he says.

Since deciding to become a comedian in late 2002, Craig Millar has done about 110 stand-up gigs. The most lucrative earned him $175 plus a meal, but he did many for free.

"It's like an apprenticeship; you've got to get up wherever and whenever," he says. "You've also got to unashamedly network and understand the business of comedy."

Craig Millar's The Colour of Comedy is at the Stork Hotel,

Elizabeth Street
, city, the next three Sunday evenings. Inquiries: 0403 427 395. Tripod's 3-Way Action is at the Town Hall tonight, April 10, 16 and 17.
